The countdown to the biggest event on the university sports calendar has officially begun after the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) launched the 2025 University Games at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono. The games will kick off on 18 December, drawing athletes from across the country.
AUUS President George Wagoogo and UCU’s Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, Prof. John Kitayimbwa, led the launch during a press conference at the university.
Prof. Kitayimbwa said UCU is fully prepared to host the multi-discipline tournament, highlighting the university’s investment in modern facilities and athlete accommodation.
“We are very ready. We have invested heavily in our sports facilities and accommodation ahead of the games,” he said.
“Our men and women’s teams are already training hard to showcase their talent come next month.”
He added that the five-day event will not only elevate UCU’s sports profile but also boost Mukono’s local economy.
“These games will promote the development of the university and stimulate business in the community. A lot of trade will happen during that week,” he noted.
AUUS President Wagoogo commended UCU for its unwavering support to university sports, describing the institution as a dependable partner whenever hosting duties arise.
“UCU has always been a pillar in promoting sports in this country. They step in whenever there is a need to host major competitions,” Wagoogo said.
He reiterated the importance of university sports in building national teams and sustaining competitive clubs.
Wagoogo confirmed that 30 universities have already expressed interest in taking part in this year’s edition. However, he cautioned institutions to strictly observe international age regulations.
“According to FISU rules, students above 25 years are not allowed to compete. We do not expect any university to violate this,” he warned.
After the launch, AUUS and UCU officials toured several sports facilities, many of which are undergoing final upgrades ahead of the games.
UCU Head of Sports Sam Lukaire assured the press that the university is more prepared than ever.
“We are better organized than last year. This time we’ve added two new sports disciplines, bringing the total to 18,” Lukaire said.
“Games will be played both during the day and under the lights at night.”
With improved facilities, expanded disciplines, and rising anticipation, UCU is gearing up to host what promises to be one of the most competitive and vibrant editions of the AUUS Games in recent years.
